Contribution of Omani Scholars to Medicine and Natural Sciences.
Call for Papers
The project is organized by: AlKhaleel bin Ahmed Al-Farahidi Center for Arabic and Human Studies (KAFCAS) and Natural and Medical Sciences Research Centre at University of Nizwa
The project aims at insistently unveiling and exposing the contributions made by Omani scholars, physicians and scientists in medicine and natural sciences, throughout the history, including astronomy, geography, mathematics, chemistry, and marine sciences.
Researchers may contribute to one or more of the following tracks and themes: Manuscripts and Literature: Focusing on preservation, study, verification and publication of Omani manuscripts and literature in the fields of medicine, astronomy, geography, mathematics, chemistry, marine sciences, etc. Oriental Studies and Orientalists: Exploring oriental studies and orientalists interested in the contributions of Omani scholars in medicine and natural sciences. Role of Universities, Research Centres and Researchers: Focusing on the role of Omani universities, research centres and researchers in highlighting and insistently exploring the Omani contributions in medicine and natural sciences – with an emphasis on the need for support and empowerment to fulfil this role efficiently. Traditional and Alternative Medicine in Oman: Highlighting the traditional and alternative medicine in Oman in terms of its applications, areas, tools, materials, impact of environmental and geographical differences, standardisation of theory and practice of Omani traditional medicine to make it parallel to modern alternative medical practices such as Chinese and Indian. Diseases and Epidemics: Studying the history of diseases and epidemics in Oman, the reasons for their emergence and how Omanis treated and tried to control their spread. Ethics of Knowledge in the Works of Omani Scholars: Studying ontology, epistemology, and ethics of knowledge in the writings of Omani scholars and physicians and exploring their feasible contemporary applications. Omani Medicinal Plants: Studying medicines and medicinal substances extracted from the Omani terrestrial and marine environment e.g., frankincense and seaweed and underscoring the feasibility of opportunities for industrial production of such plants and seaweeds. Omani Scholars and Physicians: Studying Omani scholars and physicians who contributed to medicine and natural sciences, with a mention of the Omani military medical cadres who took part in the wars and battles that the Omanis fought in defence of their country besides the foreign trips/emigrations of Omani physicians and their contributions in the countries to which they immigrated. Spiritual Therapy / Faith Healing in Oman: Exploring theory and practice of spiritual therapy in Oman, its cognitive roots, development throughout history, interaction with other civilizations/cultures, and opportunities for the development and codification of such a therapy in modern and scientific way.
Publication: Accepted papers will be presented at the Symposium, to be organized by UoN under this project, and published in the special issue of AlKhalil- UoN peer-reviewed journal. Language/s: Arabic & English. Participants: Researchers from UoN and other national and international Universities/centres.
